Although the fact that the microwave oven is one of the most used things in the kitchen, experts warn that there are certain things that must not be heated in this device.
And they are :
Infants are getting from their mother’s milk the key substances that fight the bacteria. In one study, it was found that breast milk during heating in a microwave oven, increase the growth of Escherichia coli 18 times more than in milk heated out of the microwave.
And the milk which is heated in microwave at lower temperatures had decreased amounts of isoenzymes and also encourage breeding of harmful bacteria.
It is very fast and easy to heat broccoli, so it’s no wonder that people often use a microwave oven to prepare them. But every form of cooking vegetables kills certain amount nutrients found in it. Steam cooking is the best, although we lost about 11 percent of antioxidants which are found in the broccoli. However, cooking broccoli in the microwave with a little water destroys up to 97 percent of the antioxidants.
Some microwave ovens rotate and some don’t, which can lead to uneven cooking. Defrosting frozen meat in the microwave oven is very difficult because it takes a lot of time and often the edges become brown and the middle remains frozen .
Also, if the meat is prepared immediately after thawing, you risk it to grow bacteria. Japanese researchers found that if the meat is cooked more than 6 minutes in the microwave, it loses a large amount of vitamin B12 . It’s best to leave the meat to defrost in the refrigerator overnight.
Buying frozen fruit is not as bad as it seems because it’s frozen when it’s ripe and freshly picked and thus retain all the nutrients in it. The fruit begins to lose its valuable vitamins and antioxidants when you pick it, so the frozen fruit may have more vitamins and antioxidants than the fresh fruit from the store or some supermarket, because it’s usually stored in warehouses for a couple of days or more.
So, don’t put your frozen fruit in the microwave oven, you’ll only lose the vitamins.
